- Thesis statement is the last sentence in the introduction. It is just ONE sentence.
- Thesis statement should NOT address the paper or say anything like "This paper will be about..." or "I will be writing about."

27 March 2017. Today the rough draft is due. In order to get full credit for the rough draft (a major grade), you must have
- a thesis statement (1 sentence) in the introduction

Bring your outline to me so I can check it.
Below is a sample rough draft. It includes an introduction and conclusion.
23 March 2017. Today you will organize your note cards according to topic. Then you will use the "stacks" of note cards to create an outline. Fill in the outline (handout). Then start typing the body paragraphs. Remember, you MUST include the source number in parentheses after each note card you use to write a sentence.
For example: Pete Seeger started protesting through his song lyrics in the 1930s (1). The "1" in parentheses indicates that information came from source #1.
**The focus today, Thursday, March 23, is the topics of your body paragraphs. Once you have organized your note cards into topic and have chosen the topics for your 3 body paragraphs, you should start writing your body paragraphs. Do NOT write the introduction or conclusion yet!
10 March 2017. The second annotated bibliography is due today. This is a MAJOR GRADE. Remember, you must use MLA format. Below is the document I originally gave you as a sample; you can open it and use it as a template. It is recommended that you use easybib.com to create source citations (see instructions below). When you finish the annotated bibliography, print it, and turn it in. +5 for turning in to turnitin.com by the end of the day.

8 March 2017. Today you will find your next 2 sources. (Use the Biographies in Context database found on the library's homepage. The password is "centralhigh." Check out some of the other databases, too.) Remember you are supposed to have 1 biography, 1 news article, and 1 interview. Your 4th source can be a source type of your choice. Print the 2 sources you find today and bring them to class tomorrow. The annotated bibliography for these 2 sources is due FRIDAY and is a MAJOR GRADE.
If you're wondering what you have (or should have) done for this research paper so far, here it is:
7 March 2017. Due today: the first annotated bibliography (for your first 2 sources). When you finish it, print, turn it in, and start looking for 2 more sources. We will be back in the library tomorrow to finish looking for those sources. The annotated bibliography for sources 3 & 4 is due Friday, March 10.
Use the instructions below when finding and using sources from the databases on the library's homepage. (password for Biographies in Context: centralhigh)
If you're wondering what you have (or should have) done for this research paper so far, here it is:
- You should have written a proposal letter requesting 2 people (from a list provided) to research.
- You should have found 2 sources (news article, interview) and printed them.
- You should have read each source, summarized each source, and figured out how you will use them in your research paper.
- You should have written for 10 minutes everything you already know about your topic, what you think you know, and questions you have that your research can help answer.
- You should have written 4 sentences (from your first 2 sources), embedding quotes from those sources.
- You should have typed an annotated bibliography in MLA format. The annotated bibliography should have a Works Cited entry for each source, followed by a 2-4 sentence summary of the source and an explanation of how you will use the source in your paper. (This was due yesterday, and the second one is due Friday).
- Read, summarize, and explain how you will use your 3rd and 4th sources.
- Type an annotated bibliography for sources 3 & 4. Due Friday, March 10.
- Outline your research paper - what about the person do you want to write about? Consider: why are they important? who/what have they influenced? who/what influenced them? what are some important/defining moments in their lives? what important events have happened in their lives?
- Find and write down information from your sources to include in the body of your paper (that answers the questions above). This will be done on "information cards" that you will use to write your rough draft.
- Write a rough draft of the research paper using the information cards. Include parenthetical citations to prevent plagiarism.
- Revise and edit the rough draft.
- Prepare the final draft and turn it in to turnitin.com
